Osaka conquers of the 2021 Australian Open
The third-seeded Osaka took down Jennifer Brady in straight sets, 6-4, 6-3, to win the year’s first Grand Slam and her fourth major title overall.
What began as a tight back-and-forth battle quickly turned into a lopsided affair. Osaka won six straight games between the end the first set and start of the second, where she took a commanding 4-0 lead.
Osaka’s four major titles put her in rare company. Only three other active women – Serena Williams, Venus Williams and Kim Clijsters – have reached that total.

Jennifer Brady advances to final in 2021 Australian Open
Brady gave Muchova no chance in the early going, racing out to a 2-0, 40-15 advantage. Clean stuff, the precision matching the Pennsylvanian's bulldozing power.
Quickly and somewhat inexplicably, though, Brady lost serve for 2-1 — and hung on for the rest of the set.
She overturned deficits of 15-30 in her next two service games, then 0-30 at 4-4. Brady likes to be aggressive but perhaps it was a case of too aggressive, too early.
Was playing on back-to-back days after a three-set win over friend Jessica Pegula a factor?
Nonetheless, Brady edged in front 5-4 and serving to stay in the opener, Muchova buckled with a double fault into the net on a first set point.
Brady struck five winners and 17 unforced errors in the set.
Naomi Osaka advances to final in 2021 Australian Open
"I have this mentality that people don't remember the runners-up," Osaka said, in her post-match press conference. "You might, but the winner's name is the one that's engraved."
Osaka, who has won three of the last five hardcourt Grand Slam titles, needed an hour and 15 minutes to quell the challenge from former World No.1 Williams, who was aiming for a record-tying 24th Grand Slam title this week. As their power games clashed, it was Osaka who had the edge on the day, hitting 20 winners to Williams's 12, while also committing three fewer unforced errors.

Pegula advances to SF in 2021 Australian Open
First up on Rod Laver Arena, unseeded Pegula's dream run through the draw continued thanks to a 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 win over No.5 seed Elina Svitolina, her first career win against a Top 10 player.
"I thought I served really well pretty much the whole time. I think that I kind of got a little tentative in the second set. I played a good game to break her, then I didn't hold serve. That was huge," Pegula said after the match.

Svitolina advances in 2021 Australian Open. press conference
I'm just going to embrace the opportunity and try to play well under the pressure,” Gauff, pursuing a career-third top 10 win, said earlier this week.
"This is only my second Australian Open, so I mean, I'm just going out there and having fun,” added the teen prodigy, who has spent free time in Melbourne honing her mini-golf game.
“Obviously you want to do as well or even better than the year before, but I try not to think about it and just take it one match at a time.”
Karolina Pliskova advances to third round of the 2021 Australian Open
Pliskova is another Czech player, No.25 seed Karolina Muchova, who eased past German veteran Mona Barthel, 6-4, 6-1.
"Today I think I played a bit of a better level than I did in the first match. I felt better and I stayed in the rallies. The first set was a bit shaky, but then in the second, I just went all the way and I'm happy with that," Muchova said.
"I felt like I could play rallies with her. I went for my shots, finished at the net and had great returns, so I'm just happy with today's performance."

Halep advances to third round of the 2021 Australian Open
know that she’s a very tough opponent and I expected it to be a difficult match, but it was more than I thought,” said Halep, who stretched her head-to-head advantage over Tomljanovic to 4-0 with the win.
“I was not that positive when I was talking to myself,” admitted Halep. “Mentally, I think I was a little bit stronger and I wanted to, I had the desire to win the match and I didn’t want to give up.”
