#covid19. WTA tournaments in China cancelled for 2020.

Due to the recent decision by China’s General Administration of Sport that China will not host any international sporting events in 2020 as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, all WTA tournaments that were scheduled in China on WTA’s provisional calendar will not be held

This includes the seven WTA events on the 2020 provisional calendar of:

- Week of Oct. 12 – China Open (Beijing)
- Week of Oct. 19 – Dongfeng Motor Wuhan Open
- Week of Oct. 19 – Jiangxi Open (Nanchang)
- Week of Oct. 26 – Zhengzhou Open
- Week of Nov. 9 – Shiseido WTA Finals Shenzhen
- Week of Nov. 16 – Hengqin Life WTA Elite Trophy Zhuhai
- Week of Nov. 23 – Guangzhou Open

"We are extremely disappointed that our world-class events in China will not take place this year," stated Steve Simon, WTA Chairman and CEO. "Unfortunately, this decision also includes the cancellation of the Shiseido WTA Finals Shenzhen and as result, the corresponding Porsche Race to Shenzhen. We do however respect the decision that has been made and are eager to return to China as soon as possible next season."

Svitolina conquers of the 2020 Berlín exhibition

Elina Svitolina rallied from a set down to beat Petra Kvitova to close out the first portion of the non-WTA exhibition in Berlin - which moved from grass to hard courts - before Andrea Petkovic and Anastasija Sevastova booked semifinal places in the second tournament.

In the second of three legs of the FFT's Elite Challenge, French No.3 Fiona Ferro again defeated Kristina Mladenovic to come out as the overall winner for the week.

The French No.3 had an undefeated run last week in Nice in the first leg of action of the national tournament, pulled off a similar one on the hard courts of Cannes to win the second leg over Kristina Mladenovic on Saturday, 6-1, 3-6, 10-5.

Kvitova, who beat Petkovic in straight sets on grass earlier in the week, needed to rally from a set down on the hard courts of Berlin's Tempelhof Hangar to seal her spot in the final, 3-6, 6-4, 10-5.

"I played an unbelievable first game, and since then, I was struggling a little bit," the Czech said. "In the second set, I started to play more patiently, but still aggressive... I started to go a little bit more into the court, and that helped me a lot."

A fixture in the tour's clay court calendar for nearly 20 years, the WTA was expected to return to the German capital this year after a 12-year absence from the tour calendar with a Premier-level grass court event, before the coronavirus pandemic pushed professional tennis into a hiatus.

Nonetheless, an unofficial exhibition event was announced for the city at the end of May, bringing together six WTA players and six ATP players for competition in two locations and on two surfaces - with strict limitations on the number of spectators permitted and other social distancing precautions in place.

The action kicked off on Monday at the Rot-Weiss Tennis Club, on the stadium court named for German legend Stefanie Graf, as Anastasija Sevastova and Petra Kvitova won the two quarterfinal matches that were contested.
