The Shenzhen Open, one of the events kicking off the calendar, is also one of seven WTA tournaments in China in 2015. It is staged at the Longgang Tennis Centre, which features 32 courts, and a 4,000-seat Centre Court that uses Hawk-Eye.

Chinese superstar and former French Open champion Li Na did her home country proud by capturing the first two editions of the event in 2013 and 2014. In fact, her triumph over Peng Shuai in 2014 was the second all-Chinese final in WTA history. Romanian star Simona Halep was victorious in 2015 before Agnieszka Radwanska triumphed in 2016.

A major city in the south of Southern China's Guangdong Province just north of Hong Kong, Shenzhen's modern cityscape is a result of a vibrant economy fueled by foreign investment. It is deemed southern mainland China's financial hub and hosts the Shenzhen Stock Exchange.
