France 3 Italy 2. Fed cup 2016. France advances to semis

MARSEILLE, FRANCE

Caroline Garcia dominated Camila Giorgi from start to finish to put France into the Fed Cup by BNP Paribas semifinals for the second year running.

Garcia beat the Italian 63 64 to give France a decisive 3-1 lead over Italy after Kristina Mladenovic overcame Sara Errani 76(4) 61 earlier in the day at the Palais des Sports in Marseille.

Two-time champions France will play the Netherlands for a spot in the final in April after the Dutch upset Russia earlier on Sunday.

“I didn’t play my best today, that’s all,” said Giorgi, who made 32 unforced errors while Garcia had 24.

Garcia dominated on serve and from the baseline, producing 11 winners including six aces.

“I did a great match yesterday, and today I didn’t play good but it’s OK,” the 40th-ranked Giorgi said, when asked what her overall feelings were about the tie.

The French team celebrated wildly with their captain, former top-ranked Amelie Mauresmo, after overcoming Italy in the first round of the World Group for the second straight year. France had come back from a 2-0 deficit on clay in Genoa, Italy in 2015 to stun the four-time champions as Garcia and Mladenovic won three points on the second day of the competition.
