The New ASB CLASSIC, 4-16 JANUARY 2016

Marina Erakovic confirmed as ASB Classic 2016 Wildcards

18-year-old Latvian JelenaOstapenko has been granted a main draw wildcard into the ASB Classic for 2016. The former World Number Two Junior continues the ASB Classic’s reputation for attracting the brightest talent on the WTA Tour.

” In other news, as expected Kiwi Number One Marina Erakovic (135) has been confirmed to receive the other main draw wildcard. Erakovic is looking forward to a new year and putting her 2015 injury behind her. “I think Marina is one of the most underrated sports stars in New Zealand. Tennis is the toughest female sport on the planet and Marina has been at its top end for a number of years. Not too many kiwi sports stars have had the honour of playing on a stage as big as centre court at a Grand Slam. Marina has done that twice this year against top ten players and competed very well – coming within a whisker of beating two-time Wimbledon Champion Petra Kvitova (4)” said Budge. “She has won tournaments of this level and I hope we get the chance to see the best of Marina Erakovic in front of her home crowd”, he continued.
The ASB Classic will be played from 4 to 9 January at the ASB Tennis Arena in Auckland.

The formation of what now is known as the ASB Classic occurred when Ari Hallenberg and Global Sports saw a hole in the marketplace and asked Tennis New Zealand about creating an event in Auckland. The first staging was held in 1985 as part of the 1986 tour and it moved to its current pre-Australian Open spot on the calendar, New Zealand's lone stop, in 1996. It was named the WTA's Tournament Of The Year/APAC in 2014. Champs at the tournament - staged at the ASB Tennis Arena - include Marion Bartoli, Lindsay Davenport, Elena Dementieva, Jelena Jankovic, Agnieszka Radwanska, Ana Ivanovic and Venus Williams. Auckland, also known as the City of Sails, features black sand beaches, endless water activities and fantastic dining options. It is the largest and most populous urban region in New Zealand.

Staged the first week of the year during the lead-up to the Australian Open, the Brisbane International has had quite an increase in status since its debut as a combined ATP-WTA tournament in 2009. It went from International to Premier level in 2012, with prize money for the women increasing from $220,000 to $655,000. Then in 2013 the purse went all the way up to $1 million. Brisbane's champions include Victoria Azarenka, Kim Clijsters, Petra Kvitova, Maria Sharapova and two-time winner Serena Williams. Clijsters' 2010 triumph was especially memorable, as she saved two match points in the final against rival and fellow Belgian Justine Henin in Henin's first event back after more than a year and a half away from tennis. The capital and most populous city in the Australian state of Queensland, Brisbane is classified as a global city.
It has hosted several international sporting extravaganzas, including the 1982 Commonwealth Games, the 2001 Goodwill Games and the 2008 Rugby League World Cup final.

Serena Williams named the Associated Press Female Athlete Of The 2015 Year

NEW YORK, NY, USA
Serena Williams has gotten yet another accolade for her phenomenal 2015 season, being named the Associated Press Female Athlete Of The Year for the fourth time.

UFC stars Ronda Rousey and Holly Holm and basketball player Breanna Stewart rounded out the Top 5. Williams had one of her very best seasons in 2015, collecting three Grand Slam titles - the Australian Open, French Open and Wimbledon - to bring her career haul to 21, holding the World No.1 ranking from start to finish, and winning a whopping 53 of her 56 matches during the year (the only losses coming to Petra Kvitova, Belinda Bencic and Roberta Vinci at Madrid, Toronto and the US Open).

Serena Williams has been named ITF World Champion for the sixth time in her illustrious career.

LONDON, England
Serena Williams has been named ITF Women's World Champion for the sixth time in her career, it was announced Tuesday, adding 2015 to 2002, 2009, 2012, 2013 and 2014. The ITF has been naming ITF World Champions since 1978, and Williams is just the third WTA player to win it six or more times after Martina Navratilova (who won six times - 1979, 1982, 1983, 1984, 1985 and 1986) and Steffi Graf (who won seven times - 1987, 1988, 1989, 1990, 1993, 1995 and 1996).

"It means a lot to me to be named the ITF World Champion for the sixth time," the World No.1 said about the news.
"I am proud to have achieved my second Serena Slam, in what has been an amazing year for me. Thank you for this recognition and for the undying support of the tennis community.
" Williams outperformed everyone on the Grand Slam stage this year, winning three of the four majors (Australian Open, French Open and Wimbledon) and reaching the semifinals of the other (US Open)

Belinda Bencic and Karolina Pliskova conquers of the International Premier Tennis League

Belinda Bencic won a close set of women's singles to help lead the OUE Singapore Slammers to a 26-21 upset over the Micromax Indian Aces - a team led by Indian No.1 Sania Mirza.
The Slammers came in with the advantage of having beaten the Aces just one day prior on the final day of group play.
Though Mirza was flawless in her mixed doubles win against Karolina Pliskova and Dustin Brown, Bencic's 6-5(3) win over Svetlana Kuznetsova proved crucial as fellow Swiss Stan Wawrinka won both of his sets for the Slammers to clinch victory.

LOS ANGELES, CA, USA
Maria Sharapova and friends lit up Centre Court at the UCLA Tennis Center on Day 1 of aptly-named exhibition event Maria Sharapova & Friends, presented by Porsche.
The highlight of the day was the hostess herself, Sharapova, taking on American rising star Madison Keys - and the five-time Grand Slam champion and former World No.1 squeaked by, 6-7, 6-1, 11-9. Sharapova spoke about how excited she was about the new exhibition event. "I've been coming here to practice for so many years and felt part of the community here," she explained. "I wanted to give the tennis fans in Los Angeles something back and support professional tennis in the United States."

Elsewhere, Mardy Fish outlasted Andy Roddick in a men's singles match, 7-6, 4-6, 12-10, Keys and Fish beat Roddick and Laura Robson in mixed doubles, 6-4, and, in a celebrity mixed doubles match, the all-female team of Sharapova and Chelsea Handler outdid all-male team Roddick and Will Arnett.

Martina Hingis and Roger Federer are planning to play mixed doubles together at the Rio Olympics 2015

Hingis is a former No.1 in both singles and doubles with 20 majors to her name - five in singles, 11 in doubles and four in mixed; Federer is a former No.1 in singles with 17 Grand Slam singles titles, the most of all time in the men's game.
Hingis will be going for her first Olympic medal; Federer has two of them to his name, a gold in doubles in 2008 (alongside Stan Wawrinka) and a silver in singles in 2012 (Andy Murray won the gold). And they've played mixed doubles together before.
They were the Swiss team at the Hopman Cup exhibition event in January 2001, almost 15 years ago, and they went 3-1 together - they won all three of their round robin matches easily in straight sets before falling to Jan-Michael Gambill and Monica Seles in a match tie-break in the final, 2-6, 6-4, 7-6(5).
They still won the final tie, though, 2-1.

Martina Hingis and Sania Mirza: WTA Doubles Team Of The Year awards.

"Martina and I have had an incredible year and I feel honored that we have been voted as the WTA Doubles Team Of The Year by the international media.

We hope to continue with our dream run in 2016," Mirza said. Next year, Hingis and Mirza will look to add to their already impressive trophy haul, as they chase down the greats, like former WTA Doubles Team Of The Year winners Martina Navratilova and Pam Shriver (1981-88), and Gigi Fernández and Natasha Zvereva (1993-95 and 1997). "It is a great honor to be recognized as the WTA Doubles Team Of The Year by the international media," Hingis said. "Sania and I have enjoyed every minute of the season and we hope to continue in 2016 in the same fashion. We both appreciate all the support that we have received from the fans, the media, the tournaments and the tour."

Serena Williams has been voted WTA Player Of The Year 2015

Williams also pocketed $10,582,642 in 2015, second only to her own $12,385,572 from 2013.
"One of the factors for my results is just me being free and really enjoying the game, just really enjoying every time I'm out there," Williams said after winning Wimbledon. "Not that I didn't enjoy it before, but these last eight Grand Slams have come after I got really sick, and I have a different outlook on life now. Even though I'm super intense on the tennis court all the time, I have more fun now.
" And when asked during the summer about her personal highlights, Williams didn't just point to her on-court wins - she also pointed to her emotional return to a massive tournament she once dominated. "I think Indian Wells was pretty amazing," she said, referring to her comeback to the BNP Paribas Open for the first time in 14 years and reaching the semifinals before withdrawing due to a knee injury. "And I think Serena Slam 2.0 - winning Wimbledon - was pretty awesome, too."
