Bencic, the No.4 seed this week, had an even tighter fight on her hands if that's possible, edging No.7 seed and fellow WTA Rising Star Kristina Mladenovic in two hours and 51 minutes, 7-6(4), 6-7(4), 7-5.
Up a set and 6-5, Bencic actually had match point on the Mladenovic serve, but the Frenchwoman saved it and snuck the set out in a tie-break, even breaking for a 5-3 lead in the third and a chance to serve for the match. She had three match points in that game too - but Bencic saved them all. "I had match point in the second set and she turned the match around - she was playing very, very well," Bencic said. "She had so many chances to close it out at 5-3 in the third set but I just tried to play without fear, and the match turned again. I was so happy I could close it out with two great serves."
