Off the court, Gajdosova has endured more than her fair share of difficulties, including a career-threatening bout of glandular fever in 2013. And she came into her meeting with Sharapova carrying a shoulder injury, which she then aggravated hitting a smash in the second set. Sharapova, who was leading 6-2, 3-1 at the time of the retirement, will have been pleased enough with her 53-minute workout, in which she looked in good touch.
