NEWS 1 ROUND ROGERS CUP. 6 AUGUST 2014

Despite strong support from the crowd that filled Uniprix Stadium to the rafters, Eugenie Bouchard was eliminated in her first appearance at this year’s Rogers Cup presented by National Bank.

The Montréaler bowed out after 90 minutes of lopsided play (6-0, 2-6, 6-0) against Shelby Rogers of the US. While the American qualifier may only be ranked no.113 in the world, Shelby Rogers is a rising star. Just last month, she reached the final in Bad Gastein, Austria, toppling Sara Errani and Carla Suarez Navarro on her way. Last week in Washington, she ousted Alizé Cornet. Bouchard had a surge of adrenaline in the second set, but it wasn’t enough to counter the eight breaks she faced in the match. With Stéphanie Dubois’ loss to Garbiñe Muguruza of Spain, there are no Canadians left in the main draw of the Rogers Cup presented by National Bank. Agnieszka Radwanska of Poland (3), Ana Ivanovic of Serbia (9), Caroline Wozniacki of Denmark (11), Carla Suarez Navarro of Spain (14) and Venus Williams of the US were among the winners today.
