CAROLINE WOZNIACKI WIN IN 1 ROUND, APIA INTERNATIONAL SYDNEY

WOZNIACKI_GOERGES 3-6 6-2 6-4
Caroline Wozniacki has survived a tough challenger from Julia Goerges to advance to the second round of Apia International Sydney 2014. The sixth seed recovered from the loss of the opening set to win 3-6 6-2 6-4, setting up a tricky encounter with Czech lefty Lucie Safarova.
Wozniacki may have been facing a lucky loser in Goerges, but the German had been ranked as high as No.15 and had beaten Wozniacki in each of their past three meetings. It was therefore a relieved Dane who waved to the crowd after clinching victory in the last match of the day after almost two hours on court.
“It’s the first match of the season. It’s always very tough,” Wozniacki said. “Julia had played already a few matches and she started off very strongly. Was hitting winners from the forehand, from the backhand, and I needed some time just to get into the match.
“I’m really pleased about the way I fought out there. Maybe wasn’t the prettiest match, but I was fighting.” -
